What is a Korean ampoule, and how is it different from a serum?

An ampoule is a concentrated skincare formula with a higher ratio of active ingredients than a serum, built for a stronger, more targeted effect. VOUX™ Trilight Complex® ampoules use Tranexamic Acid, PDRN, and Niacinamide at daily-use strength, unlike traditional occasional-use ampoules.

Both serums and ampoules are concentrated skincare formulas, but the distinction comes down to formulation strength and purpose. A serum is typically a daily-use formula built for long-term, ongoing care. An ampoule is a more concentrated version of that same idea: a higher ratio of active ingredients to base formula, designed to deliver a more noticeable, targeted effect. In traditional Korean skincare, ampoules were originally reserved for moments when skin needed extra support: after a professional service, during a change of season, or when a specific concern (dehydration, dullness, visible fatigue) needed to be addressed directly. For the full breakdown, see What Is an Ampoule?, or for a closer look at how an ampoule differs from a serum specifically, see Ampoule vs. Serum.

Today, many people, including the VOUX™ community, use ampoules as a daily step rather than an occasional one, layering a targeted ampoule into their routine the same way they would a serum, but formulated to work harder.

How do you build an ampoule routine step by step?

Build a routine in five steps: Cleanse, Tone, apply Ampoule, layer Moisturizer, then finish with SPF each morning. Apply a few drops of ampoule to damp skin, pressing gently into the face and neck, before moisturizer locks the actives in and supports the skin barrier.

Step 1: Cleanse Step 2: Toner Step 3: VOUX Ampoule Step 4: Moisturizer Step 5: SPF (AM)

A simple, effective order looks like this:

  1. Cleanse. Start with clean, dry or slightly damp skin so the ampoule can absorb fully.
  2. Tone. Apply your regular toner to prep and balance skin before the ampoule step.
  3. Apply the ampoule. A few drops are usually enough. Gently press, rather than rub, into the face and neck to help the formula settle in.
  4. Layer moisturizer. This helps lock in the ampoule's active ingredients and supports the skin barrier.
  5. Finish with SPF in the morning. Many of the actives found in brightening and renewal ampoules work best when skin is also protected from UV exposure during the day.

What's the difference between a morning and an evening ampoule?

Morning ampoules prioritize hydration and brightening, evening ampoules prioritize renewal. Purple Ampoule uses Tranexamic Acid and hyaluronic acid for morning glow, Red Ampoule uses PDRN and peptides for overnight renewal, and Blue Ampoule's Centella Asiatica and Niacinamide calm skin morning or night.

Not all ampoules are formulated for the same time of day. A hydrating, brightening ampoule (built around ingredients like hyaluronic acid and brightening actives such as tranexamic acid) tends to work well in the morning, giving skin a boost of moisture and glow before makeup or SPF. A renewal-focused ampoule (often built around ingredients like PDRN or peptides) is generally better suited to the evening, when skin is in repair mode overnight. A calming ampoule (built around ingredients like centella asiatica and niacinamide) is flexible enough to use morning or evening, depending on when skin needs it most, including right after shaving, for anyone dealing with post-shave irritation. For a closer look at this specifically, see When to Use an Ampoule: Morning, Night, or Both?

Purple vs. Red vs. Blue, at a Glance

Ampoule Primary Active Ingredient Best Skin Type Key Benefit When to Apply
Purple Tranexamic Acid Dry, dull, or uneven-toned skin Hydration and visible brightening Morning
Red PDRN (Sodium DNA) Skin showing fine lines or loss of firmness Overnight renewal and firmness Evening
Blue Niacinamide + Zinc PCA Reactive, congested, or post-shave skin Calms redness and balances oil Morning or evening, as needed

Can you layer more than one ampoule together?

Yes. VOUX™ Trilight Complex® ampoules are formulated to layer: Purple for hydration, Red for renewal, and Blue for calming can be combined or alternated based on daily skin needs. Layering a hydrating ampoule in the morning and a renewal ampoule at night is a common routine.

Yes, and this is one of the most useful things about ampoule-based routines: they're modular. Rather than switching between multiple full serums, you can layer a hydrating ampoule in the morning and a renewal ampoule at night, or combine a calming ampoule with a brightening one on days skin needs both. This is the idea behind VOUX's Trilight Complex® system: Red for rejuvenation and renewal, Blue for clarity and calm, and Purple for hydration and glow. Three ampoules formulated to work individually or together, so a routine can flex with what skin needs on a given day.

What ingredients should you look for in a Korean ampoule?

Look for PDRN, Centella Asiatica, Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, and multi-molecular Hyaluronic Acid. PDRN supports visible renewal, Centella Asiatica calms redness, Niacinamide balances tone, Tranexamic Acid targets uneven tone, and layered hyaluronic acid molecules hydrate skin at multiple depths for lasting dewiness.

A few categories consistently show up in well-formulated ampoules:

  • PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide), a Korean-skincare staple associated with supporting a revitalized, renewed look, often found in formulas designed for visible recovery.
  • Centella Asiatica (Cica) and its isolated actives, like Madecassoside and Asiaticoside, well known in Korean skincare for supporting calm, resilient-looking skin.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), a broadly tolerated active that supports a more balanced, refined-looking complexion.
  • Tranexamic acid, a clinically studied brightening active that helps target the look of uneven tone.
  • Hyaluronic acid, particularly multi-molecular weight versions, which hydrate at different layers of the skin for a fuller, dewier finish. See What Is Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid? for a full breakdown.

Fragrance-free formulation is also worth prioritizing, especially for anyone with sensitive or post-procedure skin, since fragrance is one of the most common causes of irritation in concentrated formulas.

How soon do ampoules show results?

Most people using a targeted ampoule daily notice visible changes in texture, tone, or hydration within a few weeks of consistent use. Because ampoules are concentrated, a few drops applied daily outperforms a larger amount used sporadically, since ampoules reward consistency over quantity.

Most people using a targeted ampoule consistently, daily, as part of a routine rather than occasionally, start to notice visible changes in texture, tone, or hydration within a few weeks. Because ampoules are concentrated, consistency tends to matter more than quantity: a few drops used daily generally outperforms a large amount used sporadically.
